The 3 C's: Elements that Affect the Board/Staff Relationship

Continual change is inherent in the nonprofit board-staff relationship. Board chairs serve their term(s) and step down, individual board members rotate off and new ones take their place, and executive directors move on to new jobs or retire. These cycles of change have their advantages, bringing new strengths, fresh energy, timely leadership and capacity-building resources. But changes at the board and executive levels can also bring uncertainty, confusion and even conflict as everyone tries to adjust to a new mix of personalities, work styles and experience.
